The Innovation Campus Groundbreaking & 10-Year Celebration of the Industrial Commons

This year marks our 10-year anniversary since April 2015—a moment to look back at the past as we prepare for an exciting future, including the groundbreaking ceremony for our flagship Innovation Campus! Join us on Thursday, June 12th, for a full day of community, connection, and inspiration as we mark a transformative moment for both our region and The Industrial Commons. Immerse yourself in our growing network of programs and explore the future of The Innovation Campus—a space designed to foster innovation, creativity, and inclusive economic growth. Innovation Campus Groundbreaking Events

Innovation Campus Groundbreaking Ceremony - 4:30 to 5:30 pm

The seated ceremony will take place outdoors, under a tent, at the future site of the campus. Guests will hear from leaders and partners who helped bring this vision to life. ADA-accessible restrooms will be available to ensure a welcoming experience for all.

TOSS Experience - 4:30 to 5:30 pm

TOSS, our interactive arts-education program, will host activities for elementary aged children (K-5th grade) during the groundbreaking ceremony.

Evening Reception *Invitation Only* - 6:00 to 8:00 pm

Join us for an evening reception at the historic Community House, where we’ll toast the day’s accomplishments with delicious hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and great company. Due to limited space, this intimate gathering is by invitation only, and guests will receive a separate invitation—thank you for your understanding!

Optional Activities and Tours

Hometown Walkabout Mural Tour - 9:00 to 10:30 am

Like many communities in Southern Appalachia, Morganton has a rich and complex history. Our walking tours offer an engaging way to learn about and celebrate the diverse cultural narratives that shape our town. Guided by art, our Hometown Walkabout tour invites everyone to take part in discovering and appreciating the unique qualities of our local communities.

Begins at 647 Hopewell Rd., and continues via trolley around downtown Morganton. Spots are limited!


Material Return, Carolina Textile District and NC Textile Innovation and Sustainability Engine Deep Dive - 10:30 am to 12:00 pm

Revitalizing the textile ecosystem means innovating for the people who work in, wear, and rely on textiles every day. At The Industrial Commons, we’re developing new material and manufacturing solutions that honor our region’s textile heritage while driving forward-looking economic growth.

Join us to learn about the evolution of the Carolina Textile District and Material Return—and how these initiatives helped lay the foundation for our National Science Foundation Engine designation, in partnership with a powerful regional network.

Land for the Commons Innovation Campus and Housing Project - 1:00 to 2:00 pm

Join our Director of Infrastructure for an interactive session exploring the vision behind our Innovation Campus and adjacent Housing Parcel. Participants will have the chance to learn about the site’s transformation story and gain a deeper understanding of the plans ahead. Available all day, guests can stop by to view our gallery featuring photography and a detailed campus model.

The Future of Work - 2:15 to 3:45 pm

Learn about the Future of Work with our workforce development programs. These programs connect individuals with job training, career opportunities, and business support—from hands-on skills in industrial sewing to mentorship, credentialing, and guidance for transitioning to employee ownership.

Virtual Reality Tour of the Innovation Campus - 3:30 to 4:30 pm

Stop by the campus before the Groundbreaking Ceremony for an interactive Augmented Reality experience! Get a firsthand preview at what the new building will look like once completed—walk through the future space, explore key features, and see how this transformative addition will shape the Innovation Campus.
